Hike grades

Weather can turn an Easy or Moderate walk into a harder one, so come prepared for more than the grade suggests.

Easy
Ascent
Up to 500m
Time
3 to 4 hours

Hills and moorland at a gentle pace over relatively short distances. A moderate level of fitness is needed.

Example: Torc

Moderate
Ascent
700m or more
Time
4 to 6 hours

10 to 15km on uphill ground with little height exposure, at a moderate pace. A fairly good level of fitness is needed.

Example: Purple Mountain

Hard
Ascent
1,000m or more
Time
5 to 8 hours

10 to 15km on steep ground at a faster pace, with some height exposure and possible scrambling. A good level of fitness is needed. Not suitable for novices.

Example: Carrauntoohil via the Devil's Ladder

Very Hard
Ascent
1,000m or more
Time
5 to 10 hours

10 to 20km on very steep ground at a fast pace, usually with height exposure and scrambling. A high level of fitness is needed. Not suitable for novices.

Example: The Reeks Walk

Some hikes sit between two grades, for example Moderate/Hard.

What the terms mean

Cumulative ascent
All the uphill sections added together.
Height exposure
Walking in places with sheer drops.
Scrambling
Places where you need your hands to climb. Somewhere between hiking and rock climbing, and it usually involves height exposure.
Ridges
Hiking or scrambling along narrow ground with sheer drops on each side.
A rocky ridge on the MacGillycuddy's Reeks rising above a sea of cloud
A Very Hard club walk, crossing a ridge in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks.
